Newton named to Baldwin Wallace University dean’s list
Riley Newton, of Kailua-Kona and a graduate of Makua Lani Christian School, has been named to the dean’s list for fall 2019 at Berea College in Berea, Ohio. Newton is majoring in theater acting and directing. Any full-time student who achieves a GPA of at least 3.6 for 12 or more graded hours or part-time student who achieves a GPA of at least 3.6 for six or more graded hours in the fall or spring semester will be placed on the dean’s list.
Scholar and activist to speak on gender and violence culture
Hawaii Preparatory Academy will be hosting a parent learning session, 7-8:30 p.m. Jan.22, led by internationally renowned scholar and activist on issues of gender, race and violence, Jackson Katz, Ph.D., on “Gender on the Agenda: the socialization of girls and boys in a culture of violence.” Katz is one of the world’s leading gender violence prevention educators, whose special area of focus is engaging men, young men and boys—across categories of socioeconomic class, race, and ethnicity—in efforts to reduce sexual assault, relationship abuse, and all forms of harassment, abuse and violence.
He will focus especially on the role of parents and others in positions of formal and informal leadership with young people of all genders, and how they can be effective anti-violence agents in their sphere of influence.
Kahakai Elementary fundraiser Feb. 1
Kahakai Elementary is holding a car wash and rummage sale, 8 a.m. to noon at Kahakai Elementary. All proceeds will go to support the fifth-grade students’ trip to Oahu and the Japanese Club’s trip to Japan. Car wash tickets are $10.
